Tragedy fails to shake Filipina's belief in Korea

Few have become a symbol of Korea’s multiculturalism like Jasmine Lee.

Lee, who has appeared on television shows such as KBS’ ``Love in Asia’’ and a cameo in the hit film ``Blood Brothers,’’ had no inkling her life would turn out this way when she first arrived in Korea in 1995.

The pretty and dusky Filipina was a 17 year old college freshman in 1994 when she met Lee Dong-ho, then 29, a seaman who was staying in her hometown in Davao, southern Philippines. Despite their age gap, the romance led to marriage a year-and-a-half later.

Their marriage initially encountered opposition from his parents, who did not understand why their eldest son would want to marry a foreigner. Plus language was also a big barrier, so she had to learn quickly.

``I didn’t even have a chance to teach my children English or Tagalog when they were small because I was busy learning Korean. We lived with my husband's parents and grandparents in the same house, and they’re old. We didn't understand each other. It was impossible for me to ask them to learn English, so I learned on my own,’’ Lee, who is now fluent in Korean, said.

At that time, there were no free Korean language classes, so Lee studied Korean from books, watched television dramas, and practiced with her husband and family members.

When she went outside, Lee endured blatant stares and prying questions from Koreans on the street. ``If I tell them I’m married to a Korean, they would always ask, `Why? How did you meet? What does your husband do?’ I always thought, `why do they have to ask those questions?’ It was too stressful to answer those questions,’’ she said.

Lee also had to deal with people’s misconceptions about the Philippines. Instead of getting offended by some Korean people’s negative opinions about her country, she tried to understand where they were coming from.

``I didn't blame them because they only saw the documentaries about poverty in the Philippines. Some people only knew the country was poor and some would tell me there are a lot of pickpockets and beggars,’’ she said.

Becoming Korean

In July 1996, she gave birth to a son Seung-geun, but when she saw the family registry, it only included her husband and son’s name.

``Since I was a foreigner, I was not included. I was living under the same roof, but the government does not recognize me as a person living in that house. Am I a ghost? My child does not have a mother? So I decided to change to Korean citizenship (in 1998),’’ she said.

Even after becoming a Korean citizen, Lee still felt very conspicuous. When her son began going to school in 2002, she did not accompany him to avoid letting people know that his mother is Filipina. By second grade, she ran out of excuses and had to go to her son’s school.

``Children pointed out I was a foreigner, maybe from Africa, and I felt like a clown in a circus. I didn’t want to but I still stood out in the crowd. I was worried my son would hear these comments and deny that I’m his mother, but when Seung-geun saw me, he shouted `Omma,'’’ she remembered fondly.

It was hard at first, with other parents thinking that she was either an English teacher or a housekeeper who visited the school in place of Seung-geun’s real mother.

Her son and daughter also had to endure taunts and nasty nicknames, such as ``Philippine monkey’’ from some classmates, but Lee says her children are tough and would fight back. ``My son is cool about it, but he would fight them if they start calling his mother `wonsoongi’ (monkey),’’ she said.

While it was hard making that first step into Korean society, Lee realized it was necessary to go out more and gain acceptance. Once people became used to her, they even forgot she was a foreigner herself.

``I couldn’t live my life inside the house all the time. I realized the more I hide, the more that people don't know (about multicultural families), the harder it will become,’’ she said.

Stepping out in society

As her social circle widened, opportunities started opening up for Lee. She joined a television quiz show and a New Year's Day singing contest for foreign wives, and worked as a translator for ``Love in Asia,’’ a show depicting the lives of multicultural families.

Her happy family life was featured on the show, a welcome change from the usual sad stories. ``The writers wanted to feature my family because I was different: we were living in Seoul and in the same house with four generations of my husband’s family. Plus I was good at Korean. They said it was a perfect example of multiculturalism,’’ she said.

Soon after, Lee was hired to become a regular panelist on Love in Asia, where she met other foreign wives.

These experiences have given Lee a realistic perspective on what it means to be a multiethnic family. She regularly gives lectures about multiculturalism in Korea for teachers and student leaders.

``Each person has their own biases. We may think we don't have biases but they don't know it yet... I always tell them to discard their biases and prejudices. Some teachers think that they are protecting biracial children but their unnecessary sympathy can make it worse. The children get more annoyed when adults will make them feel that they are different from other kids,’’ she said.

For instance, when her daughter was in first grade, a teacher told the class to be nice to her because her mother is a foreigner.

``It’s wrong for teachers to have this bias that just because she is biracial, then she will be a `wangtta’ (outcast)... My daughter didn’t even tell me about that experience, but now she said it is okay because the other children are looking up to her since she’s been on TV,’’ Lee laughed.

For foreign spouses, she encourages them to make efforts to learn the language and to venture into Korean society, which she says are the keys to being accepted.

``There is a big difference between those who speak and don’t speak Korean. Especially when the children are growing up, they get annoyed when they speak better Korean than their mothers,’’ she added.

Dealing with tragedy

It has been a month since her husband Dong-ho died. He suffered a heart attack while rescuing his daughter, who was caught in a whirlpool in a mountain stream in Okcheon-dong, Gangwon province.

Lee was devastated by her husband’s death and is still coming to grips with it. ``I never realized how important he was in my life until he was gone. His mere presence was a source of comfort for me,’’ she said.

A smile passes her lips, as she recalled how Dong-ho would pick her up at the subway station, and how he took charge of household chores when she started working.

For the last 14 years she used the last name Ba, a shortened version of her real name. It was only in June when Dong-ho decided to file the paperwork necessary for Jasmine to change her surname to Lee. But in a twist of fate, Lee received the approval to carry her husband’s last name a week after he died.

```It’s his last gift for me,’’ she said, sadly. ``There were many times before when we wanted to change my name but didn't do it. Now that we did, he couldn't even wait for me to become a real Lee.’’

Lee is not sure what the future holds for her family but she wants to keep making her husband proud. ``I do want to continue what I’m doing. (My husband) was really proud of what I was doing,’’ she said.

Who is Jasmine Lee?
Jasmine Lee, 33, has two children, Seung-geon, 14, and Seung-yeon, 10. Her husband Lee Dong-ho died last month while saving their daughter from drowning in a mountain stream in Okcheon-dong, Gangwon province last month.

She grew up in Davao, southern Philippines. She was a college freshman majoring in Biology at the Ateneo de Davao University when she met her future husband Dong-ho in 1994. They were married in April 1995, and moved to Korea later that year. She became a Korean citizen in 1998.

Since 2006, Lee has appeared as a panelist on the KBS program ``Love in Asia” and a Korean language program on educational channel EBS. She also made a cameo as a Vietnamese bride in this year's hit film ``Blood Brothers,” which featured top stars Song Kang-ho and Kang Dong-won.

Lee also participated in the Center for Korean Women and Politics’ first migrant woman regional representative project in 2008. She was initially supported by the Grand National Party to gain a seat on the Seoul Metropolitan Council last June, but was dropped at the last minute.

Lee is active in lecturing on multiculturalism, and in several organizations. She is secretary general of Waterdrop, a charity formed by foreign spouses of Koreans, and a member of United Pilipinas in Korea, an organization of Filipinos living in the country.

Gain Early Insights About the Professional World- Kids can learn how professionals operate. Most kids are only ever exposed to their family or school environment, but working atmosphere is very different from them.
Pick Up new Skills- When you work as a kid you’ll surely pick up lots of new skills. You will learn to shoulder responsibility, you’ll know how to stick to deadlines, and you’ll learn to listen and communicate better.
Identify Your Strengths And Weakness- This is great way to realise your strength areas. For example, if you work and excel in handy DIY kind of jobs you can safely figure out that you’ll be good with mechanical jobs.
Learn the basics of finance- Doesn’t matter how much pocket-money you get to handle from your parents, working wages will teach you the absolute basics of money management. Best of you’ll learn to understand the value of money.

Why do people shout at each other when they are upset?'

His disciples thought for a while,
one of them said, 'Because we lose our calm, we shout for that.'

'But, why do you shout when the other person is just next to you?' asked the saint.
'Isn't it possible to speak to him or her with a soft voice?

Why do you shout at a person when you're angry?'
Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the saint.

Finally he explained,
'When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot.
To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other.
The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other through that great distance.'

Then the saint asked, 'What happens when two people fall in love?
They don't shout at each other but talk softly, why?
Because their hearts are very close.

The distance between them is very small...'
The saint continued, 'When they love each other even more, what happens?
They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love.
Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and that's all.

That is how close two people are when they love each other.

'MORAL' said the saint:
'When you argue do not let your hearts get distant, do not say words that distance each other more, or else there will come a day when the distance is so great that you will not find the path to return!'

Philippine COMELEC should have warn every FILIPINO that election will be longer.

I had no idea that the "First Automated" Philippine national election would take this TOOOO LONGGG! I thought it will be more easier, faster and efficient if the election will be automated. But I was wrong! You can also call it Automated "counting" ONLY, because all the other processes, like verification of voters, queuing to get your ballot, still follows the traditional way of voting.

COMELEC should have warned every voter to bring packed LUNCH and DINNER instead of bottled of water with a biscuit as a result of the automation, in which they cluster the three hundred thousand plus (300,000+) precincts into seventy thousand plus (70,000+) precincts. As a result, long lines of voters waited patiently outside their precincts with 500+ more voters. The COMELEC should have anticipated this problem and re-clustered those precincts having many registered voters. Also they should have simulated the election and calculated the time it would take 50 million voters and know the exact needed CLUSTERED precinct and PCOS (Precinct count optical scan) machines.

In most cases, precincts with more than 500 voters, only around 120 had voted in the first 6 hours of the 12-hour election schedule. COMELEC should act immediately to resolve these issues.
Also, we must watched out and monitor the transmission and counting of votes. Be vigilant and guard your votes, your future.

Ano 'yung feeling ng kilala ka na sa buong Pilipinas?

Ang feeling? Sobrang happy talaga ang feeling na sa buong Pilipinas kilala ako, kahit pumunta ako sa Baguio, kahit saan ako pumunta, kahit pumunta ako sa Batangas, parang, "Hoy, Melai!" 'Di ko in-expect na kilala ako. Parang ang tagal naming nagsama ng mga tao. Sobrang happy ng feeling at sobrang overwhelming.

What do you like most about being famous? Ano ang pinakagusto mo?

Ang gusto ko? Ang pinakagusto ko sa pagiging sikat is love na love ka ng lahat ng tao. Gusto ka nilang naka-smile na lang. Parang gusto nilang ibigay lahat sa 'yo. Ang mahirap talaga sa pagiging sikat is 'yung hindi ka na makapaglakad sa kalsada nang maayos. Sana makapaglakad ka naman kahit isang beses lang na walang "WAAAAH!" gumaganon. Doon ka na sa kwarto mo 'pag gusto mo ng tahimik.

You now have your own shows, right? What's the most difficult thing about being an artista?

Ang pinakamahirap sa akin 'yung acting. 'Yung mag-acting, mag-drama. Dapat daw natural. E hindi natural sa 'kin. Sobrang nahirapan ako mag-drama!

Is showbiz really what you've always wanted in life?

Showbiz? Hindi ko talaga gusto ang showbiz. Siguro dadaaan lang 'yan sa isip ko, na gusto ko talaga maging showbiz, pero ang gusto ko talaga is teacher. 50% teacher, 50% showbiz na lang, para patas ang laban, 'di ba?

Kung sakaling magsawa ka sa showbiz, do you still want to be a teacher?

Gusto kong ipagpatuloy ang pag-aaral, para kung magkaroon ako ng anak, hindi "Uy, si Mommy, walang pinag-graduweytan!" 'di ba? Gusto ko magtapos. 'Pag malaos na, mag-aaral na ako.

You're known for being frank. Where did you get that aspect of your personality?

Hindi ko alam. Ganyan po talaga kami sa bahay. Hindi naman siguro prangka, hindi ko sinasabi kung may kulangot ang kausap ko! (laughs)

You said you are part of a women's group in Gen San. What's your advocacy?

Advocacy? 'Yung kabataan, instead na mag-drugs o mag-rugby, mag-sports na lang tayo. Basketball. Walang masama sa
sports, healthy pa tayo. At saka doon din kami sa aming lugar nag-focus. Pagkatapos sa lugar namin, doon naman sa kabilang barangay

How do you think you serve as an inspiration for women and Pinoys in general?.

Siguro inspirasyon nila ako dahil galing ako sa Gen San. Joke lang! Hindi naman ako masyadong maganda pero dumating ako sa point na ganito. Parang, wow! Ang ganda-ganda ko na ngayon! Kaya siguro na-inspire sila sa 'kin kasi pwede rin sila gumanda. Okay? Pwede rin kayo gumanda katulad ko. Mag-makeup lang kayo!

Hachi is a name of a dog in the movie hachiko: A dog's tale!

A true story of Faith, Devotion and undying Love.

The title didn't sound anything to me at first. My friend recommended it to me and warned me in advance to prepare myself on this heartbreaking movie.

Animal stories truly touch human hearts.... that's one thing I could say!

Hachi or hachiko movie isn't really a very unusual story, yet the intensity of its effect on me will be remembered forever.

I come across to this idea: If animals could be faithful and loyal, then why can't we human beings do better than them?

We have millions of reasons to be better than any other animals on this planet... both scientifically and physically....

I can't say it's a turning point or a learning session because I am certain we all are aware of this reality. But it's for sure an unforgettable moment having a chance to cry and be reminded that I should be better than a dog or any other animals.... ^_^
At least to feel and prove that I am human!

I would strongly recommend this story to anyone who loves pets and those who forget the essence of our existence. We deserve to be loved *(loyally) , must be given a time to laugh *(loudly) and of course live *(luckily)....
Of course with that matter, we need to do our responsibilities in return....

The way other presidentiable’s handle their campaign is very insulting to the Filipinos. Instead of laying their platforms, the “leading” presidentiables are banking on Pres. Gloria Arroyo’s low rating. It is funny that these candidates should be thankful to PGMA because without her “bad reputation”, they have nothing to base their candidacy.

I thoroughly understand that you can’t lead people without a vision and a clear plan on how to fulfill that vision. Empty rhetoric will lead you to nowhere. This nation if led by someone without a vision and a plan will only be reduced to chaos. That is why the candidate’s vision and platforms are very crucial in choosing whom to vote.

The only one who has the biggest chance to unite this nation is the one who is able to restrain himself from resorting to bad-mouthing, mudslinging, hatred and anger. And that is Gibo.

If the same standard of judgment be used against all of us, then we will never be chosen for any kind of job. Why? This only needs minimal common sense to arrive at the right conclusion.

MY CONCLUSION:

As a student, I was thought that before making any decisions, or hiring a person, weigh all the credentials and who among the applicants has the tools and programs that can lead to better tomorrow. Decide whom you thinks is the greatest with regards to character, competence, platform, and charisma rather than being tossed by every wind that comes along.

Think, which is more important, TO HIRE THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THE JOB? or TO HIRE THE WRONG PERSON FOR THE JOB?

lets hire the RIGHT PERSON FOR THE JOB not HIRE A PERSON BECAUSE HE WAS THROWN BY EMOTIONS. Lets hire a person with substance not style.

Tough time requires strong leadership and there is not time for on-the-job-training .

As for me, I’m placing my vote to Sec. Gilbert Teodoro, Jr. I can say he is indeed a rare kind in Philippine politics. Win or lose, I don’t care. At least I have a clear conscience that I voted the best man for the job. At least I won’t be having some kind of guilt and regret when our country is again under the leadership of incompetent ones. Actually it is never Gibo’s loss when he loses. It is the country’s loss.

LASTLY:

1. I dont hire a person because his accomplishment is being a son of former senator and president.

2. I dont hire a person because my emotion dictates more than my rational being.

3. If we hire a person without experience to take care of our future, what do we get in return?

It is like you own a company, do you trust a person to manage your company without experience? or with experience?

100% you will tell me that I will hire a person WITH EXPERIENCE.

4. I am young but I wont trust a person TO TAKE CARE OF MY FUTURE because his mom just died, emotions are high and we let him become president.

5. He has "clean image" because he prefer to say at the side, he prefer to just keep silent. Maybe if he become president, he will just be as silent as when he was a congressman and senator.

7. He should have walk his talk not talk and forget.
